New appeal for a 25-year-old Johnstone murder

It will be twenty-five years tomorrow on St. Valentine’s Day since the murder of Johnstone girl Tracey Waters.

An innocent wee lassie taken from her loving family, strangled to death and her half-clothed body dumped in a backyard in Shanks Crescent while her mother sadly was in the next Street searching for her.

The 11-year-old had just finished writing a Valentine’s card for a local boy. The card never made the post box.

At the time I was only three, unaware of what was happening in my town though locals clearly remember the shock that ran though Johnstone and the surrounding areas.

As I got older I learned about it and feel sad everytime I think about it.

Tracey was strangled as she came back from a gymnastics class and no one has ever been convicted of her murder.

Her mother Margaret McDermott, 53 has spoke to a local newspaper, the Johnstone Gazette.

She said: “The pain never goes away. My lovely Tracey was a happy normal young girl without a care in the world before she was taken away from us.

“I think about her always and keep all her belongings in the attic. We will never get over what happened that day.”

Tracey's bother Brian, aged 10 at the time has asked the police to step-up the long-running murder probe in the hope that new evidence may be found.
